Beit Sefer Ivri

The goal of the B’nai Zion Beit Sefer Ivri is to empower every student to create significant and enriching models of Jewish living.  All activities of the school are directed toward this aim.  The B’nai Zion Beit Sefer Ivri aspires to be more than a source of information to be acquired; it strives to be a vital component in helping our students to build, maintain, and reinforce their Jewish identity, as well as bring God into their everyday lives.

Gan
Prek-K and K

Gan is an introduction to Hebrew School in bite-sized format.  Meeting less often then the older students, the children of Gan experience Judaism through their senses and new friendships. Gan includes talking, singing, and learning about God and our loving relationship with the Holy One of Blessing.

Kitah Alef/Chaverim (formerly Mechinah)
Grades 1 & 2

Chaverim class builds a foundation for Jewish education with a variety of experiences in Jewish observance: holiday hands-on familiarity, the joy of Shabbat, and special days through songs, games, artwork, and crafts.  We hope to help each child find a source of significance and enrichment in Jewish living through Jewish values: the practice of Tzedakah and Mitzvot, and a love for Israel, and furthering our relationship with the Holy One of Blessing.  Hebrew instruction fosters a joy and comfortable feeling with reading and writing Hebrew.  Decoding skills, visual discrimination, and basic vocabulary are taught through class assignments and games.

Kitah Bet/Chalutzim (formerly Alef)
Grades 3-4

Chalutzim students delve deeper into Hebrew, Tefillah, God, and Judaic studies.  They look forward to exploring the narrative, values, and lessons of the Torah through experiential learning.  Students  examine their relationships with God by researching the concepts of the covenant and Kashrut, as well as other Mitzvot that bring us closer to God.  The discovery of Hebrew continues as reading, writing, and prayer (focusing on the Friday night service) are emphasized.

Kitah Gimmel/Kochavim (formerly Tichon)
Grades 5-7

Kochavim journeys further to enriching Judaic knowledge by focusing on:  Jewish lifecycle traditions and rituals, beginning with birth, and including such activities as a mock wedding, Jewish America – exploring the past and present of Judaism in the U.S., Individual Genealogy, Tzedkah and G’melut Chasadim – class project, Jewish adaptation throughout history and the creation and history of the modern state of Israel.  Their mastery of Hebrew reading is furthered through Tefillah goals that focus on the Saturday morning Shabbat service, with an emphasis on service leadership, guidelines and practice on the bimah.

Bagrut
Grades 8-10

Upon completion of Kochavim, students will have become B’nai Mitzvah.  This is not the end of their educational experiences at B’nai Zion! They are in a perfect position to transition into the Bagrut program, as well as continue in other community and synagogue programs!  The Bagrut class, led by Rabbi Goldstein, takes Judaism into a new realm through the conceptual exploration of Jewish holidays as found in Rabbinics.  This class has a three-year cycle that culminates with graduation.
